Harper 011: 20inspirations Round 19 ("Famous Artwork") - The Wire S1
ETA:  Still updating inspirations.  Stay tuned... it might be a while.  There will be dots.  (Burrell would be happy.)

Here's my first batch for 20inspirations, with season 1 of the Wire. The theme this round was famous art.  I also got inspired by this round to make famous artwork inspired textures, which you can find here.  I'm still way nervous about them, especially with all the gorgeousness at that community, but I figure I gotta post them now, since the round is about to end. Anyway, I was inspired by a lot of different artists and styles.

Number 12!!! So gorgeous. Also 6 and 17. I love these.
Harperhappy_harper13 on May 31st, 2012 03:02 am (UTC)
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me :D I was way worried that 17 would look like a copy (albeit nowhere near as brilliantly executed) of one of your icons, I think from your Apollo batch. And I had no idea if 12 would look good or just like a mess. Thanks so much for your super kind words!
Shawnalongerthanwedo on May 31st, 2012 03:04 am (UTC)
Nah, definitely not! It's gorgeous, and totally doesn't look like any of my icons (to me, at least, lol).

Beautiful work 4 and 18 are my favs!

Thanks so much! I was really worried about both of those, and it's really reassuring to hear that they worked. Thanks so much for stopping by with such kind words :)

OKAY. NOW I 100% NEED TO WATCH THE WIRE THIS SUMMER. These are super fabulous :)
Harper: THOR: janehappy_harper13 on May 31st, 2012 02:50 am (UTC)
YES YOU DO! It is amazing. Seriously, IMO, the Mona Lisa can get in line because the Wire is the greatest work of art ever. It makes me believe in the power of art. Also, it reps the DMV.

I have been meaning to watch FOREVER but I know it's a commitment so I keep putting it off.
Harper: STOCK: umbrella girlhappy_harper13 on June 6th, 2012 06:51 pm (UTC)
Aw :( It's sad when TV shows feel like commitments.
Y'all already know thathauntes on June 6th, 2012 09:00 pm (UTC)
Commitment is the wrong word. I guess it's a heavy show and I just don't feel like watching another heavy show at the moment. Maybe after this next season of Breaking Bad.

These are so lovely! 5, 12, and 13 are so pretty. I ADORE the cropping of 15, and 6 and 7 are so creative. Awesome job!!

Thank you so, so much! Your Wire entry was totally one of my other inspirations. It was like, 'See! Pretty Wire icons are possible.' Also, just staring at your Bubbles icon makes me so happy. I just heard his awesome interview with Andre Royo the other day and he is such a cool dude. I also really, really appreciate how specific your comment is. It's super useful.

Also, this post seriously would never have been possible without you because I had no idea about magich0urs cap collection until you mentioned it. Seriously, that was such a lifesaver and I am still pretty much drooling over those galleries and zips.

Oh wow, thank you so much! I'm glad I could inspire such awesomeness. :D Oh and Andre Royo is just coolest person. I read an interview with him where he said at one point during filming The Wire, a junkie came up to him to offer some drugs, as he said Andre looked like he really needed it, LOL.

Yesss that archive was awesome! I don't even remember how I stumbled upon it but it was such a great find. Happy to help! :D

Ah! I think I remember hearing that in a radio interview! I'm always so surprised by how genuinely awesome the actors from the Wire are. Where was this interview of which you speak?

13 is just plain WTF. It actually looks painted to me cuz of the gritty texturing, and the lighting in his face is wonderful! Totally love the repetition in 14 and how the small image obscures the faces in the larger one. 17 is again WTF. I love the creepy, shadowy repetition and think it lends a really awesome spookiness to that piece that's very appropriate for the darker nature of the show.
Harperhappy_harper13 on May 31st, 2012 02:59 am (UTC)
Wow! Thank you so much for such detailed feedback! I can think of no higher compliment than WTF, especially from you of recent Escher-inspired magic and general creative brilliance. I love the thing about the shadows in 17. I totally didn't think of that but now I feel more intellectual about that icon. Thank you for making me feel smart ;D
whatthedeucelibrary_of_sex on May 31st, 2012 05:44 am (UTC)
17 is truly cerebral and has that haunting quality to it. I feel like whoever that character is, he has demons that he tries to suppress or something!

Oh my goodness, thank you so much! That especially means a lot coming from you. I love your icons, especially certain request icons. I also really appreciate the specific numbers as well. Thank you so, so much for stopping by with such kind words!

Also, this is off-topic, but I just realized that I totally, pathetically had the wrong credit on 2 request icons you made me a while back (including this one) and am so sorry about that.
Simlili: Prince Omarsimlili on May 31st, 2012 10:00 am (UTC)
Wow, they're awesome! I love that there are so many characters, because one of the show's strong point is exactly that. I'm especially pleased to see Levy the lawyer among those not so fine gentlemen ^^ Michael Kostroff, the actor, is so talented!

My fave would be those featuring Bodie, and Bodie with "them bold motherfuckers", though. D's chess lesson has got to be one of the key scenes in the whole show.

Thank you so much for these great icons!
Harper: WIRE: Omar - all in the gamehappy_harper13 on June 5th, 2012 10:47 pm (UTC)
You are so welcome! You came to this entry, commented, AND commented about the Wire, so I am officially triply thrilled to see this comment. Also, I love your icon. Omar is just... amazing beyond words.

I love that there are so many characters, because one of the show's strong point is exactly that.

Amen. This is so, so true. I was originally thinking about doing the whole series, but there are just literally too many amazing characters to fit in 20 icons. Seriously, is there any other show that has so many characters who are so brilliantly developed and get so many great lines? I remember reading an article on the top 50 Wire characters or something like that a while back. It's just insane. The one thing that I always find weird about it though is how McNulty was often billed as the first main character, but seemed to be, intentionally, one of the less likeable characters.

I take it Bodie's your favorite?

I'm especially pleased to see Levy the lawyer among those not so fine gentlemen ^^ Michael Kostroff, the actor, is so talented!

Thanks so much! But I must confess that I am now intrigued. What else has he been in? I saw him on Veronica Mars playing a character who had integrity and it kind of blew my mind because he was so different from Levy. I remember reading that he's pretty involved in some really good causes.

D's chess lesson has got to be one of the key scenes in the whole show.

Aw man, I miss D so much. But that chess scene was truly the shit. So many good lines and what a great metaphor to carry over throughout the series. I'm assuming you've seem the whole series, right? I was about to write something, but realized it contained a spoiler for the last season.
Simlili: TheWiresimlili on June 6th, 2012 02:05 pm (UTC)
Bodie isn't my favourite, I kinda hated him at the beginning, until I got to know him better and realise that Bodie really is a soldier, he can't be blamed for the war getting dirty.
I have a soft spot for Bubbles. And Omar, and Dukie with his puppy face. The Chris and Snoop duo, the Sobotka boys, ... Like you said, there's too many of them to name a favourite, can you pick one?
McNulty was, I think, meant to be the main character when the show was created, then the writers grew ambitious and decided The Wire could be more than "McNulty against the World". And they were so right! And he's such a selfish jerk, really, the sexiest selfish jerk but still XD

I don't know Levy from anywhere else, I'm just in awe everytime he's in a scene.

And no, I haven't seen season 5. My boyfriend finally found time to watch too, so I rewatched the first four seasons with him and now the last one is waiting for us. And then it'll be over and I'll be sad lol

Ok I guess I sort of commented already but I just want to squee about these a little more. I really love 1 even more every time I see it, the texture use is just *stunning* as well as the composition and the muted colors fit the texturizing perfectly. It's a really really organic look.
The blending in 5 is great and the whole look of 6 just works so well. 8 has a lovely crop and coloring, 12 is very eye-catching and pretty in every way, 13 is gorgeous and manages to really look like a painting in a way that's still very natural and pretty, 15 has amazing coloring and of course 17 is all kinds of amazing and truly artistic. Awesome set!
Harperhappy_harper13 on June 5th, 2012 10:16 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much for the additional (and so awesomely detailed!!) squeeing! It means a lot to me! I LOVED making 1, and I'm so glad you like it too. It was like the first icon that almost assured me that I could complete a round. 6 was my absolute favorite and I had no idea whether it would work, so it's so, so reassuring to see your beautiful comment. Thank you so, so much for your super helpful and kind comment :D <3

Thanks so much! It took me forever to settle on that one and I was still unsure about it. It's really, really reassuring to see your kind words :)

But it's even more reassuring to see Wallace. That's from Episode 6, right?
brennanspeaks: Wallacebrennanspeaks on June 5th, 2012 05:36 am (UTC)
Yes! That's Wallace as he's finding out about Brandon in 1.06. I'm so sad that he was only around for one season. I like how that one turned out, but my screencap quality was pretty bad; I was capping myself off of Megavideo. Mind if I ask where you found yours?
Harperhappy_harper13 on June 5th, 2012 10:13 pm (UTC)
Yes! That's Wallace as he's finding out about Brandon in 1.06. I'm so sad that he was only around for one season.

I get what you mean about his short tenure on the show, but, at the same time, I can't imagine the first season without his death, you know? I feel like it was, in a lot of ways, THE pivotal moment of Season 1, and definitely the one where David Simon & co proved that nothing was safe and they'd do anything for the sake of the story, realism, and all.

But man, I still feel you on it being so, so ridiculously sad. Making Poot one of the shooters, the build-up at the restaurant (was it Wendy's?) and that scene where the detectives went to Poot's mom's house and all she could say was that Wallace owed her money made it so much more horrible. All he did was be human and react with basic empathy to what happened to Brandon. I feel like if there's anything in art that's proof that life's not fair, it's Wallace. Is he your favorite character?

I like how that one turned out, but my screencap quality was pretty bad; I was capping myself off of Megavideo. Mind if I ask where you found yours?

Totally! I was in the same boat, capping by hand (and totally failing regularly at it because it was so much work) until a few weeks ago. naushika basically made my life by pointing me toward this wonderful, wonderful, glorious, beautiful site, and I am inordinately pleased to pass on the magic :). She also has zip files at her LJ. I have never seen a screenname so fitting. Finally finding good Wire screencaps really is magic, and the show itself was always an hour long, so it's doubly perfect. Sorry, I'm done rambling. I love this show so much and it is always awesome to see another fan :)
